After living in Africa, Tony Khalil returned to Lebanon in 2014 with his two children, choosing to settle and farm in his village rather than Beirut.
He established his farm with 23 greenhouses, initially relying on chemical-intensive agriculture. High input costs, repeated losses, and growing health concerns gradually revealed the limits of these farming practices.
Seeking alternatives, Tony connected with his municipality and joined agroecology activities with Jibal, receiving training and close follow-up from experts. Out of more than 60 farmers who began this transition journey, only four continued — and despite significant losses along the way, Tony remained committed.
He started by transitioning one greenhouse, then three. Today, after four years of continuous support, he hasn’t been putting any chemical inputs in his farm and all the greenhouses are agrecological. He intends to remove some and shifting the landscape in the next coming years.
